DESIGN OF THE WEEK

She Sells Seashells

Imagine this design at your next beach themed event. Used with a riser, it could be the focal point of your buffet table. And it's low enough to be used as a centerpiece for your guest tables, as well. But how do you keep the flowers fresh in a bed of sand?

Put a about a third of a block of pre-soaked floral foam into a water tight container. Here I used a plastic deli tray that once held some yummy cheese spread. Be sure the foam is level with the top of your outer container. Add water to the smaller container and place it into the glass cube. Then add sand to the cube (available at most hardware stores for about $5.00 for 50 pounds). Leave your foam exposed until you've added your flowers. I used six lily stems here, but you could go with a minimalist look and use fewer. Or try a different flower - maybe sunflowers or dahlias. Once your flowers are in place, cover the foam with sand. Nestle a few shells in the sand, hot glue a couple to the container, maybe add a starfish or two, and scatter some on the table. You can almost hear the waves crashing on the shore!
