I used a white pumpkin to create this lavish centerpiece, but you could certainly use an orange or blue pumpkin, a turban or other type of squash, or for a long table, use an assortment of veggie vessels of various shapes and sizes.
The worst part of making this design is cleaning the pumpkin. You know the drill! I found that an ice cream scooper helps a bit. Pre-soaked floral foam is then placed in the cavity. I used a phillips head screwdriver to bore holes in the flesh, then inserted the flowers. Hopefully, the stems will be strong enough to get them into the foam. It might be best to prepare the pumpkin ahead of time and add the flowers as close to the last minute as possible. Chrysanthemums hold up pretty well, though. OK, so here is the part where I make an embarrassing confession: As with most of my containers, I always add water to keep the foam soaked. Guess what happened when I did it this time..........yes, you guessed it - it leaked out of the holes! Duh!
You can create any pattern you like. Maybe only put them in every other "bulge" or put them in the indentations in between. Use a couple of types of flowers if you want. The possibilities are endless! I poked pieces of a bamboo skewer into the candle to help secure it to the foam. Then I simply surrounded it with more flowers. It looks fine just like that, but adding a few Autumn leaves, flowers and votives around the base makes it just a little more elegant. Although impressive, this arrangement did not take that much time to create. If any of you attempt this, I would love to see photos!
