DESIGN OF THE WEEK

Just the Flax, Please

A single flax leaf wound around the inside of this simple cylinder provides rhythm and movement, while also disguising the stems in a rich, chocolate brown swirl.

You may need to remove the stiff spine of the flax leaf with a sharp florist's knife to make it flexible enough to bend around the vase. Green or variegated flax would look good, too. Don't have flax? How about part of a palm leaf? Leaves from bulb flowers such as tulips or daffodils would work. See what you can find. I gathered up a bunch of coral alstromeria and secured them with a rubber band. Then I cut the grouping to fit the vase. I also added the centers from some spent gerbera daisies. Before tossing any wilted blooms, see if you can pluck the petals off and use the centers in an arrangement. Very fun! This design was so quick and inexpensive, but look how beautiful it is!
