DESIGN OF THE WEEK

Best Mom Ever!

I'm becoming a big fan of foamies. The blue "Soccer Mom" box is a foamie from the craft store, as well as the soccer balls and letters. I didn't even need glue! Just peel and stick. And foamies come in so many designs and patterns! You could create your own arrangement in a vase or other container using the taped grid method or floral foam. But how simple to just insert a potted plant!

For "Button Button", I spray painted a terra cotta pot then, with a glue gun, added colorful buttons and fabric trim around the top. Floral foam supports three golden sunflowers and lime green kermit mums from a grocery store bouquet and one bunch of red carnations, also from the grocery store.

If your mom loves gardening, why not tie a pair of gloves, a garden tool and a packet of seeds to a watering can with raffia? Notice how I taped a grid across the top of the opening, then added water. Then I simply inserted flowers from a grocery store bouquet into the watering can. Don't you think mom will like this a lot better than handing her a bouquet wrapped in cellophane?

Remember the container inside a container technique? My inner container is a tin can. Gumballs were added between that and the glass cylinder. I'm not saying that part was easy - they were rolling all over the place! You can use floral foam or a taped grid and add whatever flowers mom likes best.

Coffee mugs, soup mugs, tea cups can all be used to present mom with a fragrant bunch of fresh flowers. Just add pre-soaked floral foam (available at most craft and discount department stores), some greens and finally, fresh flowers. Again, grocery store flowers are perfect. You may want to add a few yard greens.

You may remember this trick from Valentine's Day. One gift box, a box of 64 crayons, two-sided carpet tape and ribbon...put three rows of carpet tape around the box. Attach the ribbon to the top (only necessary if you need to cover something on the box, like the "Happy Birthday" on this one). Then attach the crayons all around. Let the kids help! They'll have a ball! Again, I used a potted plant, but you could make an arrangement in a jar or or other recyclable. Just wanted to show you easy options!
